FaxSTF™ 2.6.1 Updater will convert your FaxSTF™ version 2.2.3, 2.2.4, or 2.2.5 software to a new version (2.6.1) which retains all the supported features of version 2.2.3 and adds support for the 840AV and 660AV Macintoshes. Exar & SendFax™ modems are not supported by the updated version 2.6.1.
FaxSTF™ 3.0 is available as an upgrade to Ver. 2.6.1. Added features include: New user interface; Grayscale printing; Fully-integrated phonebook importing and exporting; Combine and include (enveloping) capabilities; ARA support; and much more.
STF AutoPak, containing add-on modules for ver. 3.0 — STF AutoPrint, STF AutoOCR, Background Imaging, and a Developers Kit — is also available. STF AutoPak allows you to automate printing and Optical Character Recognition, image fax documents in the background, and fax-enable your database or custom application program.

Please make back-up copies of your phonebooks, "Coverpages" file, and any important faxes (all found in your "FaxSpoolƒ" folder inside your System folder) before running the Updater.
The Installer will replace various system extensions and resources which can alert virus protection programs such as SAM™ or Disinfectant™. Please disable any virus protection software before installing the software.

To install the 2.6.1 update:
1. Open the "FaxSTF™ Installer folder which was created when you extracted the self-extracting archive file.
2. Copy the contents of the "FaxSTF™ Installer" folder to a blank floppy diskette (800K or 1.4K).
3. Name the diskette "FaxSTF™ Installer" — the easiest way is to select the folder name and "Copy" it, then select the diskette name and select "Paste."
4. Double-click on the diskette (if it is not already open)
5. Double-click on the "Installer" icon.
6. Click "Install" to begin the installation.
The installer will replace the Fax Menu control panel, the FaxPrint extension and drivers, and the Registration application.
When the installation is finished, you will be asked to restart your Macintosh.
If the installation fails, or the software fails to function properly, you will need to re-install fresh software from your original Installation diskettes and then run the updater again. Please keep the new updater Installer diskette with your original FaxSTF™ diskettes in case you need to re-install the software at a future date.
The Registration application will appear after the restart. Your product registration is VERY important to us and to you — please send it!. PLEASE NOTE: Information about your system configuration, and programs installed, will be included with your Registration unless you "uncheck" the "include System information" checkbox. This information is not required for registration, but it is very helpful to our Tech Support department in the event of problems. If you choose not to include this information, please be prepared to provide it if you call us for help.
AV support — version 2.6.1 is compatible with the revamped serial port (GeoPort) on 840AV and 660AV computers. The GeoPort Telecom Adapter cannot be used with version 2.6.1, but any compatible fax/data modem may be attached to the Serial Port. Support of the GeoPort Telecom Adapter (and PowerBook Express modem) is anticipated in a future release of FaxSTF™ ver. 3.0.
LaserWriter 8 — FaxMenu has been revised to allow the printer selection shortcut to work with the LaserWriter 8 print drivers.
14,400 faxing — Improved reliability of sending data at 14,400 bps. Improved compatibility (handshaking) with other high-speed devices.
Macro dial string — Fixed long-dialing string problems with version 2.2.5 (USRobotics-only). Restored ability to send long strings using Macro dial string. NOTE: The Macro dial string must be specified when the fax is created for transmission, because it is stored in the fax document.
Registration — the Registration application has been revised to make it compatible with the Macintosh 660 and 840 AV computers.
The FaxSTF Class One driver for portable computers includes support for the Apple Power Manager feature which will automatically wake a sleeping Mac when the scheduled transmission time of a fax arrives. This feature will ONLY work on the Mac Portable (both models) and the PowerBook 100 computer.
Apple did not include support for this functionality in the PowerBook 140, 145 (A & B), 160, 165, 165C, 170, 180, or 180c. This does not affect the ability to "wake on ring" and receive a fax when using an internal Class 1 modem. The FaxSTF™ Class 2 modem driver is not Power Manager aware and therefore cannot wake up a PowerBook for either sending or receiving.
FaxSTF™ 2.6.1 Power Manager awareness requires use of an internal modem, external modems cannot wake the PowerBook to send or receive. Because FaxSTF™ 2.6.1 does not support the Express Modem — Duo 210, 230, 250, & 270 computers cannot be set to wake on ring.
Although both Remote Access and the FaxSTF™ software can be installed at the same time, only ONE can be active at any given time. For example, you can EITHER have Remote Access set up to answer the phone, OR FaxSTF™. If Remote Access is set up to answer calls, the FaxSTF™ software will shut down. This means you will not be able to send or receive faxes while Remote Access is waiting for a call. To use FaxSTF™ again, disable call answering in Remote Access. FaxSTF™ 3.0, available as an upgrade, is fully compatible with ARA.
FaxSTF™ will NOT fax EPS files or images directly. The FaxPrint printer driver is a QuickDraw printer, this means it expects applications to print using the Macintosh's native graphics language, QuickDraw.
If you must use EPS, we have had many users report success using Freedom of Press™, or Freedom of Press™ Light, by Custom Applications, Inc. These products translate postscript commands into native QuickDraw equivalents.
We believe there are no significant errors in the current documentation. If you find an error, please fax it in so we may make corrections in future printings.
Due to erratic results encountered during testing of version 2.6.1, manual send capability was disabled for the following modems: Panasonic TO-700B, TO-702H, & TO-703B; USRobotics Sportster 14.4; and Zoom PBK 144. Manual receive capability was disabled for the Macronix MaxLite 96 PB.
Unsupported modems — support for modems based on Exar and Sierra SendFax™ chipsets has been removed from version 2.6.1.
DiskLock™ on a Mac II (68020) — If you select "Restart" from the Special menu an Unimplemented Trap will occur. Be sure to turn off extensions (by selecting "Shut Down" then starting up with the "Shift" key held down) before installing.
Q: What should I do when I get the following message?
"Faxes cannot be sent immediately since the fax
software is turned off. Please turn it back on in
the Chooser."
A: This usually happens because the modem was not turned on when you started your Mac. Try to remember to turn on the modem first, then start your Mac. When you get this message, you must turn the software back on.
You will need to turn the software on in the Chooser as follows:
1) Open the Chooser (in the Apple Menu).
2) Click on the FaxPrint icon.
3) Click on the Setup button.
4) Click on the "Fax Software" icon in the FaxSettings window.
At the top of the Fax Software Settings Panel, you will see "On" and "Off" buttons. Simply click the "On" button. Please refer to Chapter 4: Software Configuration for a detailed explanation.
Q: Why can't I send or receive faxes from certain fax machines?
A: There are several reasons you may have difficulty with certain fax machines or fax modems. Some common things to check are:
1) Carrier wait time — if it is set too short your modem may be giving up before a connection can be established. (See Chapter 4 for instructions for this setting.)
2) Station Message — some fax machines will not accept "alpha" characters in the Station Message. Try replacing your Station Message with one consisting of only numbers (0-9), a "plus" sign (+) and blank "spaces" ( ).
3) Incompatible devices — while we test extensively, it is impossible to try every possible hardware/software combination. If you encounter such a device, please gather as much information as possible about the problem device and contact STF. We'll try to solve any problems we can.
A: There are a couple of reasons the -6005 error will be generated. The first thing to check is the phone number:
• Is the number correct?
• If it is long distance, did you include the "1 "?
• Are you trying to dial your own area code?
Enter the phone number into the fax phonebook exactly like you would dial it with a regular telephone.
You could also be getting this error because your modem and the receiving fax machine (or modem) are incompatible. There are some fax modems/fax machines that just won't work together. However, you shouldn't run into many of these. Here's how to check: Click the Setup button for FaxPrint in the Chooser and set the speaker on your modem to "Always" on. Try sending a fax to the troublesome device. When the devices try to connect, you should hear a bunch of "squealing" and "static" going back and forth several times. If you hear this and they don't connect, they're probably incompatible. Get in touch with the owner of the fax machine and make sure it is Group III compatible.
Q: Why do I get the error -6006 when turning the fax software on?
A: This means some other software application has control of the modem port.
If you have Remote Access installed, please refer to the Remote Access notes which appear earlier in this document.
If not, make sure you don't have a communication program open while you are trying to enable the fax software. Some programs do not release the port properly, even when you quit the application. If you can't tell for sure Restart your Macintosh. You should no longer get the -6006 error.
Q: How can I tell if I have a Class II modem (aka SP-2388, aka PN-2388)?
A: Open FaxStatus from the Apple Menu. If "About FaxStatus...", "Manual Receive", and "Quit" are the only items under the "Fax" menu, you probably have a Class II modem. NOTE: There are also a few Class 1 modems which do not support Manual Send, but these are rare.
Q: Should I backup any parts of the FaxSTF™ software?
A: YES! You should backup any important received fax documents and your PhoneBook files. These files are saved in a folder called "FaxSpoolƒ" which is located in your System Folder (unless you've moved it using the "FaxSpool Locator" utility). Open the "FaxSpoolƒ" folder and make backup copies of your "Fax Numbers" file and any other PhoneBook or fax documents which are important to you.
Q: When faxing using Microsoft Word 5.0, there is a lot of "garbage" text printed over the top of my tables, what is wrong?
A: This usually occurs when you have used FaxMenu to switch from your normal printer to FaxPrint. The application (in this case MS Word) doesn't realize that the current printer has changed and still thinks it is printing to a device which is postscript capable (FaxPrint is not). If you have a problem faxing tables using the FaxMenu shortcut, try using the Chooser to select FaxPrint. This will force the application to notice that the printer has been switched.
